My GPS IS THE ENEMY!

Our day started so well. We had a lovely breakfast in the dining room at Doonbeg Golf Club (thought it was included but unfortunately it was not). I finally got my Irish oatmeal (porridge)and enjoyed it thoroughly. Tom had an early tee time and since it was a beautiful, sunny day, I decided to walk the course with him. What a course. It was challenging as a walker, let alone as a golfer. But Tom loved the experience -- it was a real treat for him and for me. The course hugs the Atlantic Ocean and the views were truly breathtaking.

After four hours of walking and golfing (with no foot/ankle pain, knock on wood), we decided to take a drive north. We had a delicious pub lunch in a town called Lahinch. I had the best seafood chowder I've ever had and a beautiful, fresh salad. We wound up at the Cliffs of Moher, a generous gift from Mother Nature. I really can't describe what it looked like -- all I can say is it was magnificent and dramatic. If you google Cliffs of Moher, I'm sure you'll find pictures that are better than any we took.

Then, the true drama began. We decided to take a different route back to Doonbeg, to get some different sites. We plugged a town name into the GPS and then the adventure began. The sun was about to set and Tom wasn't too thrilled about driving in the dark, so we were hoping to be back before then. We wound up on the smallest road possible -- I really think it was a logging road (piles of cut logs were the big hint)-- full of ruts and mud and potholes. If we were in Scotland, I would have half expected the Loch Ness Monster to spring out onto the road. We were so scared and Tom did such a good job of driving and I was a terrible passenger and navigator. The GPS said it was two miles of that "road" but it felt like twenty. I wish I was better at describing my emotions, but let me say that I was scared sh**less. I kept thinking the car was going to break down (it sounded like the bottom was being scraped raw) and we had no cell phone and there wasn't another car in site.

Needless to say, we made it out of there and went to the nearest town to ask directions, use a bathroom and head for "home." I think we were ready to kiss the door of our hotel and have no plans on going anywhere tonight. As a matter of fact, we may never trust the GPS again and we definitely will avoid night time driving.

I am enjoying our beautiful suite, watching t.v., having a taste of Jameson and writing here. Tomorrow is another day but I'm not going to think about it right now. All I know is driving will be part of the day and I'll put off thinking about that as long as possible.
