We made it to Dublin. The flights actually weren't too bad. We flew through JFK, a terrible airport to navigate in my opinion, but we finally found our gate and had plenty of time to spare. We arrived in Dublin at 5a.m. and of course it was dark and it was incredibly cold (especially for a Florida gal). I think it was about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. We picked up our rental car, stuffed it with all of our luggage and were on our way -- but where to? Obviously we couldn't check in to our B&B, but we decided to head that way anyway. My husband, Tom, is so brave. He got behind that wheel (wrong side of the car) and hit the road (wrong side of the road) and I had to navigate. I won't go into detail, but let me just say that "roundabouts" are a pain and so confusing, especially in the dark and being sleep deprived. I already have a new appreciation for our well marked roads and highways.
We spent a few hours in Trim, County Meath, the location of our B&B. I had a delicious cup of hot coffee (I think it could have been just a hot cup and I would have been happy at that point) and I had my first taste of brown Irish soda bread -- what a treat. Then we walked (and froze) and tried to get into the B&B, but we were way too early so we tried to go to the Hill of Tarra -- just couldn't figure it out so we went back to the now familiar town of Trim where we toured the Trim Castle. I had donned my long johns at that point, so I was happy and enjoyed the tour. The castle was used in the filming of Braveheart and it was a fascinating tour. We then had a tasty pub lunch (Tom had his first "real" Guiness and loved it) and then finally back to the B & B for a well needed nap.
We haven't figured out what we are doing tomorrow, but I'm sure driving, eating and sleeping will be on the agenda (and staying warm). I am happy to be here and am looking forward to this journey.
